About the role

We are embarking on an exciting new research programme to make social surveys more flexible, responsive and efficient. This involves adopting web-first and mixed-mode designs where possible; exploring innovative digital developments such as integrating passive data collection within social surveys; and conducting methodological research into these new approaches.

As part of this, we’re looking to recruit an experienced Survey Researcher to oversee the development of some of world’s longest-running and most highly regarded social research studies, including those with National Statistic status, such as the National Travel Survey and the British Social Attitudes survey.

The successful individual will be the project director on a large-scale social survey and will work closely with Survey Commissioners, Researchers, Methodological experts and Operational specialists to ensure it continues to evolve and embrace new technologies while maintaining data quality. You will also be leading on a range of other methodological design projects, exploring, designing and testing innovative research approaches which put the respondent at the heart of the survey design process.
In addition to overseeing the development of existing projects, you will take an active role in business generation at NatCen by leading on writing tenders and grant applications and presenting at conferences.

The successful candidate will have:

• Excellent research skills and enthusiasm for research design, with hands-on experience of managing large-scale social surveys.

• A demonstrable understanding of quantitative survey methods and a proven commitment to exploring, designing and testing innovative research approaches.

• Experience of new business development including writing proposals and/or grant applications.

• Demonstrable management and leadership skills and a track record of building positive relationships with customers, funders, partners and across different internal teams.

• The ability to manage, develop, mentor and motivate a team of researchers.
